Silver Medals
Malt Maniacs Awards - Silver Medals

Ah, yes.... I'm afraid that this page of SILVER MEDAL WINNERS in the MM Awards
has suffered from one or our site crashes in the past. I've reconstructed the data
until 2008, but the results for 2009, 2010 and 2011 have not been included here.
Please check out the individual 'annual' pages for the full results for those years.

And while it's difficult to find a gold medal winner for less than 150 Euro's these
days, the friendly priced 'daily drams' category where bottles cost less than
50 Euro's still offers some silver medal winners that offer great value for money.
In fact, silver medal winners are much more abundant than gold winners; there
are just a few dozen golds, but literally hundreds of silver medal winners...

MM Archives - Home

In our scoring system the 85-89 points bracket is reserved for the whiskies that
we deem 'highly recommendable'. We don't just feel that these are whiskies
that every serious whisky lover should try at least once in his (or her) life.
These whiskies may not be quite as legendary as the gold medal winners, but
they still represent a great level of craftsmanship.

All Silver Medal Winners

Because silver medal winners are much more abundant than gold medal winners (just 42 between
2003 and 2008); I had to split this long list of silver medal into several chapters; the distilleries and
bottlers that have earned one or more silver medals over the years (2003 - 2008). Some of these
whiskies are 'daily drams' with a street price below 50 Euro's. More recommendable yet affordable
whiskies can be found on the bronze medal winners page.

Aberlour

When I write this, Aberlour hasn't won a gold medal yet. That being said, most batches of their
heavily sherried, cask strength A'bunadh did very well at the MM Awards. Some of the Aberlour
expressions are even friendlier priced and a few of those picked up a bunch of bronze medals in
our competition. Their silver medal winners so far are two batches of the A'bunadh and a bottle
you have to buy at the distillery;

Aberlour A'bunadh Batch #15 (59,6%, OB, Bottled +/- 2006) - Prime Sherried Dram Award 2006
Aberlour A'bunadh Batch #20 (60,5%, OB) - Supreme Sherry Cask Award 2007 (Daily Drams)
Aberlour 13yo 1989/2003 Warehouse N°1
(58.7%, OB, Sherry C#13330, Submitted 2003)

Adelphi

This independent bottler came to our attention at the second edition of the MM Awards in 2004 with
a hugely impressive 'whisky that cannot be named'. That was fantastic and they managed to keep
impressing us in the years after that. Their portfolio ranges from very affordable 'bastard' bottlings
to more upmarket, older expressions. Two bottles won a gold medal so far - and these won silver;

Adelphi 13yo 1992/2006 'Breath of Islay' (57,5%, Adelphi, C#5346, 275 Bts., Submitted 2006)
Adelphi 13yo 1992/2006 'Breath of the Isles' (52,6%, Adelphi, C#3201, 292 Bts., Submitted 2007)

Tamdhu 15yo 1991 (60%, Adelphi, C#1955, 257 Bts., Submitted 2006)

Amrut (India)

Amrut from India is a relatively recent discovery. We knew about the distillery, but samples we tried
a few years ago didn't really tickle our fancy. However, in 2008 Amrut entered the MM Awards for the
first time and managed to impress most jurors quite a bit.

Amrut NAS (62.7%, Blackadder, C#BA 1/2008, 277 Bts., Bottled 2008) - Non-Plus-Ultra Award 2008 (Daily Drams)
Amrut NAS 'Cask Strength' (61.9%, OB, Bottled 09/'07, India, submitted 2008)

Ardbeg

Based on the solid reputation of Ardbeg it's hardly surprising that they managed to pick up a few silver medals along the way.
The most impressive result was probably the solid silver medal that was awarded to a six years old expression from the SMWS in 2005.

Ardbeg NAS 'Airigh Nam Beist' (46%, OB, Distilled 1990, Submitted 2006)
Ardbeg 6yo 1998/2005 Sherry Gorda (56.2%, Scotch Malt Whisky Society 33.57, Sherry Gorda, Submitted 2005)

Ardbeg 1998/2008 'Renaissance' (55.9%, OB)
Ardbeg 17yo 1991/2008 (46%, Hart Brothers, Finest Collection, submitted 2008)

Bushmills

After Cooley distillery managed to win a few medals in our annual whisky competition, Bushmills decided to try their luck as well.
They released a handful of very good bottlings in a short period of time before returning to relative obscurity again.

Bushmills 1993 (56,5%, OB for La Maison du Whisky Paris, Bourbon C#298, Ireland, Submitted 2006)
Bushmills 16yo (40%, OB, Ireland, Bottled +/- 2007, Submitted 2007)
Bushmills 1989 (53.7%, OB for Celtic Whiskey Shop, Cask #16267, Submitted 2007)

Bunnahabhain

Until 2009, the only releases from the Bunnahabhain distillery that won a silver medal were independent bottlings.

Bunnahabhain 23yo 1979 (50%, Lombard, Jewels of Scotland, Bottled +/- 2002, Submitted 2007)
Bunnahabhain 27yo 1978/2006 (55,6%, Signatory, Sherry C#2542, 509 Bts., Submitted 2006)
Bunnahabhain 1974/2005 (46%, Berry Bros & Rudd, casks #11534-11536, Submitted 2005)
Bunnahabhain 36yo 1967/2003 (40.1%, Peerless, cask #3327, 203 bottles, Submitted 2004)

Bruichladdich

Bruichladdich's sophisticated PR machine has raised some eyebrows over the years, but there's no denying that Mark Reynier has revitalised the Bruichladdich distillery and put it back on the whisky map. Their results at our annual whisky competition are extra impressive if you realise that many of the jurors are peatheads while Bruichladdich is a lightly peated malt whisky.

Bruichladdich NAS 3D 'Moine Mhor' (50%, Official Bottling, Bottled 2005, Submitted 2005)
Bruichladdich NAS 'Infinity' (55.5%, Official Bottling, Bottled 2005) - Single Starlet Award 2005
Bruichladdich 1970/2002 (44.2%, Official Bottling, Submitted 2003)
Port Charlotte 2001/2007 PC6 (61.6%, OB, Submitted 2007)

Bowmore

Until 2009 Morrisson Bowmore never participated in the Malt Maniacs Awards, so the only bottlings of Bowmore that managed to win a medal were independent bottlings. It's quite remarkable that (once again until 2009) all silver medal winners were distilled in the early 1990's.

Bowmore 1993/2004 Extra Strength (50%, Wilson & Morgan, Submitted 2004)
Bowmore 1991/2005 (59,6%, Scotch Single Malt Circle, C#575, Submitted 2006)
Bowmore 15yo 1990/2006 (53,1%, Spirit Safe, Hogshead #3351, 270 Bts., Submitted 2006)
Bowmore 16yo 1990/2007 (58,4%, Whisky-Doris, Bourbon, 88 Bts., Submitted 2007)

Blackadder / Clydesdale

Blackadder is one of the few independent bottlers that's not located in the United Kingdom; Blackadder (and the 'Clydesdale' sister brand)  are operated from Sweden by Robin Tucek, a.k.a. Robin Blackadder.

Glen Albyn 33yo 1974/2008 (58.9%, The Clydesdale Company, C#0016/1601, 248 Bts., submitted 2008)

Berry Brothers & Rudd

The Berry Brothers & Rudd company has a long and proud history in the wine world, but they've also been dabbling in whisky for many years. Their little old store in the heart of London has hardly changed in the more than three centuries since the company was founded in 1698.

Caol Ila 1996/2006 (57%, Berry Brothers, Submitted 2006)
Carsebridge 1965/2006 (46%, Berry Bros, Rare Reserve, Single Grain, Submitted 2006)

Glenlivet 1971/2007 (46%, BBR, C#6450, submitted 2008)

Benriach

The Benriach distillery didn't have a very impressive reputation during the 1990's, but after Chivas Brothers (a subsidiary of Pernod Ricard) sold the distillery to Billy Walker, Geoff Bell and Wayne Kieswetter in 2004 they managed to quickly re-establish the brand.

Benriach 11yo 1994/2005 (59,7%, Signatory, Heavily Peated, Port Pipe Finish, 863 Bts., Submitted 2006)

Duncan Taylor

The basis of independent bottler Duncan Taylor is the collection of Mr. Abe Rosenberg who passed away in 1994. In 2002 Euan Shand and Alan Gordon bought the company of Mr. Rosenverg and relocated it from New York to Huntly in Scotland.

Caol Ila 12yo 1990/2003 (46%, Whisky Galore, Submitted 2003)

Douglas Laing

The Douglas Laing bottling company started out in 1949 as blenders, but began bottling single malt whiskies in 1999. They have released their whiskies in series like 'Old Malt Cask', 'Platinum', 'Advanced Samples', 'Premier Barrel', 'McGibbon's Provenance' and 'Clan Denny'.

Saint Magdalene 24yo 1978/2002
(50%, Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask, 504 bottles, Submitted 2003)

Diageo

Since Diageo is Scotland's largest whisky producer, the number of silver medal winning whiskies listed here might seem relatively low.
However, many distilleries owned by Diageo (for example Caol Ila and Lagavulin) have their own header on this page.

Cardhu 22yo 1982/2005 (57.8%, Official Bottling, 3000 Bottles, Submitted 2005)
Dalwhinnie 20yo 1986/2006 (56,8%, OB, Refill European Casks, Submitted 2007)

Rosebank 25yo 1981/2007 (61.4%, OB, submitted 2008)

Cooley (Ireland)

Without realising it, the maniacs may have been a bit ethnocentric in the past. For years we only looked at the whiskies that are produced in Scotland. However, thanks to the Malt Maniacs Awards we've learned that they make wonderful whiskies in countries like Ireland and Japan as well. A relatively small percentage of participants came from these countries, but they won many awards and medals.

Connemara 1991/2007 (50,2%, OB for 'The Nectar Belgium', Peated malt, C#V96/1 129, Submitted 2007)
Tyrconnel 10yo Sherry Finish (46%, OB, Bottled +/- 2007) - Top Irish Whisky for 2007

Celtic Whisky Company (France)

The Celtic Whisky Company (a French independent bottler) was founded in 1997 and they were one of the pioneers of finishing.
If I'm not mistaken, they were the first to ever use an ex-Sauternes cask for the finishing of whisky...

CWC Islay 1998/2007 (58,8%, Celtic Whisky Company, C#52, 305 Bts.) - Supreme Peated Malt Award 2007 (Daily Drams)
Highland 1993/2006 'Monbazillac Finish' (46%, Celtique Connexion, Bourbon & Monbazillac, 365 Bts., Submitted 2006)
Speyside 1991/2006 'Double Mat. Sauternes Finish' (50%, Celtique Connexion, 297 Bts.) - Supreme Warped Cask Award 2006

Clynelish

I'm not a huge fan of all whisky that is produced at the Clynelish distillery myself (although I've tried a few brilliant expressions), but enough other maniacs love it enough to bring Clynelish an above average number of silver medals in our annual whisky competition.

Clynelish 11yo 1994/2005 (58,9%, The Whisky Exchange - The Single Malts of Scotland, Sherry C#4011, 367 Bts., Submitted 2006)

Clynelish 1971/2005 (45.7%, M&H Cask Selection, refill hogshead, 228 bottles, Submitted 2005)

Caol Ila

For some reason, an unusually high number of bottlings from the Caol Ila distillery has always been amongst the bottles that were submitted for the Malt Maniacs Awards. The number is actually even higher than the overview below suggests; some of the medal winning whiskies are listed with the independent bottler that submitted them, for example Berry Brothers or Duncan Taylor.

Caol Ila NAS 'Cask Strength' (55%, Official Bottling, Bottled +/- 2004) - Daily Dram Award 2004

Gordon & Macphail

Gordon & MacPhail was founded in 1895 by James Gordon and John Mac Phail. The independent bottler from Elgin has released many
'semi-official' bottlings from (among others) Ardmore, Imperial, Inverleven and Glentauchers - especially during the 1980's and 1990's.

Benromach 22yo Port Pipes Finish (45%, G&M Official Bottling, 22 months finish, 3500 Bottles, Bottled 2005, Submitted 2005)

Glenrothes

Most bottlings of Glenrothes that managed to win a silver medal were independent bottlings. That could be considered evidence that supports my theory that a lot of potentially brilliant single casks bottlings are drowned in the mega-vattings they are used in...

Glenrothes 1990/2002 (46%, Wilson & Morgan, Sherry Wood) - Bang For Your Buck Award 2003
Glenrothes-Glenlivet 16yo 1990/2007 (57,3%, Cadenhead Authentic Collection, Rum Butt, 588 Bts., Submitted 2007)

Glenrothes 36yo 1968/2005 (53.2%, Ducan Taylor, cask #13486, 144 bottles, Submitted 2005)

Glenlivet

The Glenlivet distillery was one of the first legal malt whisky distilleries in Scotland. The whisky that was produced there has grown into one of the most famous brands in the whisky world in the almost two centuries since the distillery was founded in 1824.

Recent official bottlings from Glen Grant have been below par for more than a decade, but independent bottlers managed to obtain some brilliant casks with older whiskies in the past. So, IF you want to try a Glen Grant, it would be best to buy an older independent bottling.

Glengoyne

For a few years after the take-over of the Glengoyne distillery by Ian Macleod, they impressed the whisky world with an improvement of their regular releases and some superb single cask bottlings. Unfortunately, they were unable to keep it up in recent years...

Glenfarclas

Over the years the Glenfarclas distillery in Speyside managed to win an impressive number of medals and awards - especially if you consider that Glenfarclas is a relatively small, family owned distillery. So, they don't have a massive PR machine behind them.

Lagavulin

In whisky bars it's relatively easy to get in a bar fight... Simply ask the clientele what is the best distillery on Islay, and you'll likely get three different answers from different people; Ardbeg, Laphroaig and Lagavulin. Based on the results of the MM Awards, it seems Ardbeg has not been able to keep up with its solid reputation. Until 2008 they only managed to win half a dozen silver medals, while Laphroaig and Lagavulin both won twice as many medals as Ardbeg.

Keep in mind: All whiskies in the competition are tasted completely blind. You're very welcome to check out the all the details of the conditions and requirements on the Rules & Regulations page. Due to the harsh conditions of the awards, the chances winning a gold medal are quite slim; the silver medal winners are nothing to be scoffed at either. Some of them received five of six votes for gold, so chances are you'll enjoy those quite a bit as well. Otherwise, check out the MaltMenu (tasting notes and 'thumbs up or down' advice about some 250 official bottlings), the Specials section (noteworthy recent independent releases and single casks), the matrix (over 3,000 whiskies that were sampled by four or more maniacs) and the monitor (our scores for over 10,000 different whiskies).
