Once the ‘Whisky Lexicon’ is finished it should provide a full
A-Z overview of the whisky-related words and phrases that
I know of, as well as a brief explanation.

I’ll also try to find room for some items of the old site like the
mAlmanac, an overview of purely personal favourite whiskies
and the Deviant Drams section for other whiskies and spirits.

Please check out the sitemap for an overview of pages on MM that are already “surfable”.
The 10 chapters of the Beginner’s Guide are fully surfable again and the interactive whisky map still works.
Please follow me on Twitter or Facebook for regular updates on the progress of the reconstruction of Malt Madness.

So far, these pages are online: A - B - C - D - E - F - G
I’m also working on a ‘lexicology’ page to help guide visitors
through the lexicon, but I’m afraid that’s still a work in progress.

Malt Whisky Lexicon

The 10 chapters of this guide are divided into 3 groups, each with
another focus. The first 3 chapters deal with the FUNDAMENTALS of
Scotch malt whisky production. They cover the single malt basics like
its history, the whisky vocabulary that you’ll need during conversation
and the role of GEOGRAPHY on whisky.

Macallan malt whiskey

The next three chapters focus on the production process of malt whisky; the DISTILLATION of
the fresh spirit from malted barley, the MATURATION that turns the spirit into whisky and finally
the BOTTLING that puts the liquid into a user friendly package. (Fun fact: until the production of
glass bottles was mechanised in the 1820s, most whisky was sold by the dram or by the barrel.)

The last four chapters deal with the practical implications of dramming; SHOPPING for bottles, the ENJOYMENT of malt whisky, the actual PRACTICE of dramming (in larger quantities) and finally a CONCLUSION that wraps things up.

All this may seem like a lot of boring theory at first, but it will become very useful later on...

Many independent bottlers display the year in which a malt whisky (often a bottling from a single cask) was
bottled, but that's usually not the case with the so-called official bottlings that are released by the owner.

... With all the ‘glens’ to cover in Scotland I got momentarily discouraged...
I’ll get back to this Lexicon once I’ve reconstructed some more distillery profiles in the DD section.
Check out the Beginner’s Guide for a site section that’s already finished.
