Liquid Log entries

April 2006May 2006June 2006 June 2006July 2006June 2006Fresh Entries Log entry #300 is the last (and most massive)
entry in the liquid log that I started a decade
ago in 1997. This entry contains short reviews
and dram diaries for a few months of 2006.
For each month I've also gathered the links
to the topical log entries I published in one
of the six special reports that are listed above.
Scroll down for all the data I've collected so
far or click on the name of the month at the
right to jump directly to that part of the page.
Ah well, you got that I guess.

Meanwhile, there's also Malt Maniacs of course.
At the start of this 300th log entry, MM17 was
already filling up nicely. MM#18 and MM#19
should be published during 2006 as well.
The plan is to launch a completely refurbished
design and structure by January 1, 2007.

April 2006 Review & Dram Diary
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Not much of an 'overall review' for April, I'm afraid...
Pretty much all of my alcoholic adventures are covered in the various topical reports listed below.
In fact, if I may say so myself it's pretty amazing that I managed to report on most April events at all. I've been insanely busy with my brand new job and the renovation of my apartment. Here are my reports for April 2006;

01/04/2006 - First Things First (I had to sample just six more drams to reach the 1500 malts mark)
07/04/2006 - Distillery Profiles (It didn't take long for the maniacs to 'overtake me' on the challenge)
08/04/2006 - Live Limburg Video connection (A snapshot of seven maniacs in hog heaven - Germany)
09/04/2006 - A Beginner's Guide to Amsterdam (Some overdue pointers for tourists on my home town)
29/04/2006 - Walpurgisnacht 2006  (Not really about 'wrapping up', rather a long standing tradition)
15/04/2006 - PLOWED Invasion (Some of the American PLOWED people dropped by here in Amsterdam)
17/04/2006 - Bang For Your Buck (Kennet argues that my BFYB List is wrong w.r.t. Strathisla 12yo.)
21/04/2006 - Short Report from Singapore (Kevin Chia offers us a very brief glimpse of life in Singapore)
23/04/2006 - Amsterdam Hot Spots (A quick overview of some useful spots in Amsterdam's city centre)
25/04/2006 - Groundhog Day (As so often before I've allowed myself to get a little bit side-tracked)
27/04/2006 - Amsterdramming (A few assorted tasting notes on recently sampled drams 'in town')
29/04/2006 - Walpurgis 2006 (Yes, it's that time of the year again. Just a micro-session this time)
30/04/2006 - Status Review (So, what's the progress on Hamstergeddon and my To Do List?)

THE APRIL 2006 DRAM DIARY

Not too bad for a month's 'work'....

May 2006 Review & Dram Diary
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

May 2006 was a very productive month, at least as far as 'Hamstergeddon' is concerned.
I visited fellow malt maniac Serge in Alsace, France and even though the Hamstergeddon trip lasted just three days (one full day and two half days, actually) I managed to cross a lot of obscure distilleries from my 'to do list' after I returned to Holland; Old Fettercairn, Glenury Royal, Strathisla and Teaninich, if I'm not mistaken. Progress was made with regards to quite a few other obscure distilleries as well, but they still need a 'finishing blow' of one or two expressions. I expect we can deal that blow to a few remaining distilleries during Davin's upcoming visit to Amsterdam in June. But I'll get to that later - here's a list of my 'topical' reports for May 2006;

01/05/2006 - Why Oh Why (To explain why I'm wrapping up this log we take a trip down memory lane)
04/05/2006 - Bottle Codes (Joe Barry from South Africa worries a bit about the small print on the label)
11/05/2005 - A Shifting Paradigm (Why doesn't the current site structure meet our needs anymore?)
19/05/2006 - Fresh Casks for Sale? (Richard Secrest asks a common question: where can I buy a cask?)
21/05/2006 - Hamstergeddon Status Report 1.5 (My visit to Alsace was a massive hamster-boost)
25/05/2006 - Feis Ile 2006 (Needless to say, a number of maniacs attended the 2006 edition of Feis Ile)
28/05/2006 - Fame & Fortune (Wow... The malt maniacs have received quite a bit of 'press' lately)

June 2006 Review & Dram Diary
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Even though I probably should focus on other matters right now, most of my attention went once more to the Hamstergeddon project this month. Davin dropped by in Amsterdam after Feis Ile 2006 for some obsessive dramming that would eradicate many of the remaining distilleries on our 'to do list'. I guess the recent focus on obscure material might be boring (especially for relative novices that are familiar with the more 'mainstream' OB's), so I'm happy to report that we have some alternative entertainment for you as well: the first E-pistles of Malt Maniacs #18 were published on June 1. Here are my log entries for June 2006;

04/06/2006 - Warming Up (A little 'warming up' session for the upcoming debauchery with Davin)
11/06/2006 - Super Wigman Tasting (My doubts about a tasting calling itself 'super' were unfounded)
13/06/2006 - Hamster Fight! (Davin visited Amsterdam for a MASSIVE Hamstergeddon session)
15/06/2006 - Bottle Codes (II) (Joe Barry's question made me think. And then think some more...)
23/06/2006 - Lowland Whisky (Allan Old finally dares to reveil his deep dark secret: he loves Lowlanders)
28/06/2006 - Bottle Codes (III) (Fred Prins argues that we'd better keep the secret formulas... eh, secret)
30/06/2006 - The Hamsterdam Sessions (My delayed tasting notes for the 'Hamsterdramming' in June)

Most of the drams below were sampled during just two occasions; Davin's visit to Amsterdam and the Super Wigman Tasting in Zeist. Due to my hectic schedule I didn't have the time to write as extensively about these events as I would have liked. I can only hope that some of the other maniacs will share their experiences on these pages as well. Speaking of which.... Here are the E-pistles published in Malt Maniacs in June...

01/06/2006 - Alsatian Adventures 2006 (Part 1) (A partial report on my recent visit to Serge in Alsace)
01/06/2006 - Another Look at Oak (Belgian foreign correspondent Bert Bruyneel looks at the physics of oak)
01/06/2006 - Glen Albyn Distillery Profile (Michel van Meersbergen reports on another silent distillery)
01/06/2006 - Musings about the original question (3) (The third instalment in Lex's research report)
01/06/2006 - Spirit of Speyside Festival 2006 (Yes, Feis Ile isn't the only whisky festival in Scotland)
01/06/2006 - Glencraig Distillery Profile (Ho-cheng had a hard task - Glencraig wasn't even a building)
15/06/2006 - An Interview with George Grant (Luc Timmermans fires a few questions at George Grant)
21/06/2006 - 1.618 & The Da Vinci Dram (Ralf Mitchell takes a look at whisky from a different perspective)
24/06/2006 - Glen Flagler / Killyloch Distillery Profile (Robert Karlsson dug deep to get to the bottom)
28/06/2006 - The Art of Blending Prune Wine & Whisky (Lawrence Graham did some historical research)

So, it seems I can add some fresh entries to my Track Record again.
My malt mileage so far: 1628 single malt Scotch whiskies...

July 2006 Review & Dram Diary
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Holland and most of the rest of Europe suffered from a massive heat wave during July 2006.
Far too hot for any serious dramming, so my 'dram diary' for this month would have been gloriously short if it hadn't been for 'the incident' on July 21 that seriously slowed things down as far as MM is concerned - but I'll get to that next month... Meanwhile, a measly three Liquid Log entries for July - and no dram diary...

01/07/2006 - We're Pregnant! (We're expecting our new and improved virtual offspring in six months)
09/07/2006 - This & That  (Gunnar Thormodsaeter sent me a question - or rather, he sent quite a few!)
12/07/2006 - Malt Maniacs Awards 2006 (Yes, it's on: the fourth edition of the Malt Maniacs Awards)
15/07/2006 - Couch Potato Special (Too hot too write about the city in this heat; so a little light reading)

So, with apparently very little happening in July, let's move on to...

August 2006 Review & Dram Diary

Well, that sucked... A heavy concussion, a broken cheekbone, a burnt ankle and a banged up hip.
How it all happened? I really don't have a clue. On the night of July 21 I was - most likely - hit by a car and delivered to the hospital by policemen who had found me wandering about 'in a confused condition' around 3:00 AM. My neurosurgeon called my condition 'Retrograde Amnesia' which basically means I'm lacking a few days worth of memory. So far it doesn't seem like I've lost any 'key abilities', but my memory (which wasn't in the best of shapes anyway) doesn't seem to be working at 100% yet. I also still need quite a bit of sleep, so all in all I probably won't be quite as actively working on the big 'reconstruction' as I originally planned...
Reason enough to pull the planned 'freezing' of the website forward to August 15.

Here's an overview of the last (?) entries in my Liquid Log in the current format...

01/08/2006 - Government Conspiracies?  (Once again I found myself in mysterious circumstances)
12/08/2006 - Ye Olde Matrix  (Now that the big overhaul of the site is near, I'm starting to panic)
13/08/2006 - Malt Maniacs Awards 2006 Update   (Just a month after kicking things off we're 'loaded')
14/08/2006 - The 'Jump' to 1650 malts (?)  (With the site ready to crash, I have to hurry it up)
15/08/2006 - A Frozen Website  (After running continuously for almost a decade, it's time for an overhaul)
15/08/2006 - Hamstergeddon Satus Report 1.9   (How far did we come with 'Hamstergeddon'?)
15/08/2006 - Malt Maniacs Awards Filling Party in Alsace  (A quick preview of our annual gathering)
15/08/2006 - High Tech Heroes  (Now that the site will be 'frozen' for a while, we'll need to get technical)
15/08/2006 - Dark City   (The 'Guide to Amsterdam' will be wrapped up before it has proberly began)
15/08/2006 - Unraveled  (Ah, yes... Unforseen circumstances forced me to wrap this page up early)

Liquid Log OverviewLater Liquid Log entriesEarlier Liquid Log entries

Hurray! I've made it to exactly 1650 malts...
But there's only a little more than four months left until the end of 2006.
So how about the 'Death Race 2000'? Will I make it to 2000 malts before the end of the year?
Well, I already told you I need to wrap up this Liquid Log , but I'll try to keep you updated on the progress via the last two 'old school' issues of Malt Maniacs; MM#18 and MM#19 . Check out those issues for my adventures during the last months of 2006.

Sweet drams,

Johannes

PS: Oh yeah, I almost forgot; maybe it would be convenient if I added a few links to the main archive pages.
After a decade of heavy dramming (1997 - 2006) I had to put all the old content on this seperate 'archive' website. Navigating through these old pages should be a little bit harder than on the new websites, but with the help of the guided tour and the numerous text links on these pages I think you should be able to find specific information eventually. You can find links to the various new pages by scrolling to the top or bottom of this page.

Now, for this archive... First of all, there's a brief personal introduction about yours truly and the Beginner's Guide to single malt whisky that was part of the first version of the Malt Madness site in 1996. That would be the place to start for curious novices. If you're more serious about malts, you may want to check out my Track Record with +/- 2000 whiskies I scored or my Liquid Log with the entries I wrote during 'a decade of heavy dramming'. The log contains more than 300 log entries, so I won't include all the links here. Just start at the beginning in 1997 or jump directly to the more recent stuff in the Blog from 2005 and 2006.

Of course, you could read all of my Liquid Log 'cover to cover', but that wouldn't be very efficient.
My mAlmanac offers a few topical lists for those of you who are looking for specific information; a Hit List with my personal favourite malts, a Shit List with whiskies that are not quite as dear to me, a Bang-For-Your-Buck List with whiskies that offer good value and last but not least my Stock List with the bottles on my shelves and in my 'reserve stock'. That will most likely be the page to grow obsolete the first on this entire archive site, but at least you'll get a glimpse at my collection around 2006.

This list of 'main pages' is far from complete yet (I've barely covered the Malt Maniacs section) but there you have it...

Check out the front page of Malt Madness for an overview of all the latest additions.

Where did the time go?

Where did the time go? This is my 300th entry since I started this log in 1997.
Obviously, this is a perfect moment to ponder on the past and look at the future.

In fact, this is also the perfect occasion to wrap up this 'liquid log' after ten years.
Don't worry, I won't stop bothering you with my insights and opinions, but since this
old website is coming apart at the seams I will have to distribute my regular doses of
wit and wisom differently in the future. During the last eight months of 2006 I will send
out some of my notes and scores to the members of the mailinglist, publish some stuff
in Malt Maniacs and wrap up some unfinished business in these special reports;

300A - Past, Present & Future (Observations & ideas about the future of MM)
300B - Hamstergeddon 2006 (updates on our 'six malts on the matrix' mission)
300C - Festivities (Reports about various meetings, festivals and 'super tastings')
300D - Vox Populi (Some interesting malt questions from 'our captive audience')
300E - A Beginner's Guide to Amsterdam (Yeah, I know it's a bit off-topic...)
300F - The Raveling (The tying up of several unraveling 'loose ends' of my log)

And last but not least: the Distillery Profiles - I've added a special 'progress' page.
On this page I'll collect some monthly reviews and my 'malt mileages' for 2006.
